20 x 200

i've written about 20 x 200 before (see here), and i still think it's such an affordable way to buy really awesome art. though i've never bought anything here myself (not enough walls in my apartment for more art!) i think it'd make a really fantastic gift. obviously buying art for someone else can be really tricky, but there are a few friends who i think i could pick something out for! ahem, EMK. check out my most recent favorites:

wayne thiebaud

m and i went to the armory show on sunday..and we saw a lot of amazing, beautiful art. it really blows my mind how expensive it can be though. one of our favorite artists we saw was wayne thiebaud, an american painter. i think i partly love his stuff because he paints cupcakes and lipsticks and other sweet things. he is partly associated with the pop art movement, though he was painting before andy warhol become famous. i want to learn more. here are a few of my favorites i found online. i think the cupcake was actually for sale at the armoy show and looking at it closer made me notice the beautiful brushstrokes on the actual frosting of the cupcake. love.

wall decor

does anyone know where you can get these AWESOME invisible bookshelves? i have part of a blank wall in my bedroom and i'd love to find some of these and put them up. however, i'm not wild about drilling a hole into a wall since these days, i move every year. 

i'm thinking a removable wall decal might be a safer move. isn't this one awesome? i want to make one like it, maybe a little big bigger..

i just stumbled upon gregory thielker's work on my modern metropolis. on first look, they seem like some pretty but unmonumental photographs of views from cars on rainy days. if you inspect closer, you'll see that these are actually paintings. this guy is awesome! and he also went to williams which makes me like him more and many of his paintings are of roads in new england. so cool! check out his website for even more paintings!

500 pencils

so i just did something really impulsive. i saw something about colored pencils on black eiffel and was immediately intrigued. i followed the link to social designer and then found this litlte project, called 500 pencils. turns out, you can sign up for a 'subscription' of colored pencils, where you get 25 new colors for 20 months. i looked around a little, decided i had to have it and really, 33 dollars isn't a bad deal for 500 PENCILS!!!! so i went for it! now, starting next month (they say they come around the 10th of the month) i will get a sweet little package of pencils in my mailbox. this is much more exciting than the anthropologie catalogue or self magazine that i usually look forward to. i can't wait to go out and find myself a sketch book!
